Who can be a Witness?
Pretty much anyone can be a witness. Using our Deed Poll documents you can use your friend, neighbour, colleague or associate as a witness. The witness needs to meet the following criteria, for you to validly execute your Deed Poll. The witness should:
- be over 18 years old
- preferably have a different address of residence
- be independent, that is not be a family member
- be able to speak, read and understand English
- be of sane mind and capable of comprehension
If you need to use the Deed Poll document abroad, for example you are a foreign national and want to change your name abroad, then you may need to get the Deed Poll document legalised. For this to be the case only a solicitor or notary public can be a witness. If you are a foreign national living within the UK and want to change your name details within the UK, then you do not need to legalise the Deed Poll document and it is not necessary to use a solicitor or notary public as a witness. With our Deed Poll documents, pretty much anyone can be a witness providing they meet the above criteria.
